If you've been thinking about getting some family photos done, you've probably looked at studio shoots and thought one of two things: either that's not really us, or the kids will never sit still for that. You're probably right on both counts.
Here's why more and more Huddersfield families are choosing outdoor portrait sessions instead - and why it almost always produces better results.

It feels natural, not forced
The number one reason people put off getting family photos done is that they don't want to feel awkward. Standing against a backdrop in a studio, being told where to put your hands, trying to get the kids to look at the camera at the same time - it's uncomfortable for everyone and it shows in the photos.
Outdoor sessions feel completely different. We're moving, exploring, doing things - and the photos happen in between. Most of the best shots come from moments where everyone has forgotten I'm there.

West Yorkshire has incredible backdrops
We are genuinely spoiled for location here. From the woodland around Huddersfield and the Holme Valley to the moorland of the Pennines, the Calder Valley, and beyond - there is no shortage of beautiful, varied backdrops right on our doorstep.
The light in Yorkshire at golden hour is something else. Early mornings and late afternoons in summer produce the kind of warm, glowing images that simply cannot be replicated in a studio.

Kids behave better outside
This is just true. Toddlers who would never sit still on a studio floor will happily wander through a woodland for an hour. Children who clam up in front of a camera forget about it entirely when they're chasing each other around a field.
As a mum myself, I know what it looks like when a session with kids goes sideways. I'm patient, I'm used to it, and I'm very good at working with the chaos rather than against it. Some of my favourite family images have come from the moments that weren't planned at all.

You get more variety
An outdoor session gives you movement, texture, light, and space that a studio simply can't provide. Walking shots, candid moments, close-ups, wider landscape images - you end up with a much more varied gallery that tells the story of your family rather than just documenting how you looked on one particular day.
